Our Leading Record of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Top Place.

On the surface, Lux could seem closer to an arduous academic challenge rather than a new pop project by an artist whose previous single featured an international K-pop star. Divided across four distinct sections and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning symphonic album investigating female mystery, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, often via the prism of various saintly figures. The end of a romance—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, buoyed by the constant sound of a full orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure ambition by itself makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars seem rather modest.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

The fact that this album succeeds in avoid dry academic posturing is almost a miracle, and sole praise going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time project to alchemize the past and the present, the scale are much greater here, and the tightrope walk more pronounced. The element that really elevates her fourth album, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, is a core sense of fun. Much like the iconic artist during her peak, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you into its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing your heart apart, you still desire to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit shines clearly during the stunning piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, all the music drops away, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo thuds down with comedic impact. The song immediately segues into the wild track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a surprise appearance from the artist Björk.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener rarely exactly understand—or even want to know—what it will go next."

Nearly each song concludes at a totally distinct point than where it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame with a featherlight symphony before disintegrating in digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing the artist's earlier trap-infused style begins off moody and sinister, with menacing beats, until fluttering traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to smooth the song's rough edges.

The Balance Between Art and Pop

Another crucial balancing act on the album is straddling the gap of radical innovation and broad appeal. This is little surprise that it has achieved her highest-charting release to crack the upper reaches of major charts: its heart contains a suite of utterly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in the English language swells around a chorus that feels to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spins upward. That trick gets repeated by a different expansive ballad that grows and contracts, weaving multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural honesty of contemporary breakup songs, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for high artistry in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption for glorious elevation, crafting an over-the-top drama that masterfully controls its inherent excess. It is a deep well of hidden treasure that requires patience to completely mine but never feels like a chore. While other big releases of the year felt like a meager scraps, Lux is a sumptuous banquet where the guests at the table, some tipsy on holy wine, flutter from conversations about historical saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about useless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's most endlessly inventive practitioner.
