Social Media Content Creators Fueling Parallel Trade for Unlicensed Slimming Drug

A shadow market for unapproved slimming medications is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts directly for supplier links, while also receiving discount codes.

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to users injecting substances of unknown origin.

Several professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or messaging apps is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still breach medicines, marketing, and customer laws, risking penalties, prosecution or prison.

Platform Response and Content Elimination

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed violative material and banned associated hashtags and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening compliance measures.

Digital Trading Operations

Research also discovered communities with up to 9,000 participants selling the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, populated with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and detailed guides for mixing or injecting at residence.

Within minutes of entering one group, a vendor shared contact information, where most purchases take place. The vendor provided an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. Inside these groups, messages show dark colored packages with Royal Mail stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically sold at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory responses varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Safety Measures

A spokesperson for the messaging service said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Warnings

“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these digital products may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to recent price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using social media. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was clean,” she said.

Her team has already encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified sources. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A representative from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may subject users to potentially serious health risks”.
