Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
